He noted that the pain started 2 weeks ago and became worse. He reported normal bowel movements in the morning, denied fever\/chills, nausea, vomiting, or genitourinary symptoms. A recent colonoscopy was notable for moderate sigmoid diverticulosis and a 4mm sessile sigmoid polyp that was resected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Past medical history: Diverticulitis, ADHD, eczema, insomnia, loose stools<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No past surgical history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vitals: BP 107\/65 | Pulse 73 | Temp 98 \u00b0F (36.7 \u00b0C) | Resp 18 | BMI 25.35 kg\/m\u00b2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A bedside ultrasound was performed, and the following image was obtained:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"298\" height=\"217\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/emultrasound.sdsc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/diverticulitis-ezgif.com-resize.gif?resize=298%2C217&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2444\" style=\"width:560px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Figure 1: Diverticula with bowel wall edema<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Uncomplicated acute diverticulitis characteristics on ultrasound are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">thickened bowel wall &gt;5mm<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">presence of diverticula with focal outpouching or bowel wall discontinuity<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">noncompressible pericolic fat inflammation with hyperechogenic halo around bowel serosa<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sonographic tenderness with compression<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Outcome:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">General surgery was consulted for possible surgical evaluation, which was deferred after findings on CT noted to be non-surgical. Patient was sent home with ciprofloxacin 500mg BID for 7 days and metronidazole 500mg TID for 7 days.
