Our Ultrasound Fellowship
Our mission is to train physicians who are both technically and clinically skilled in the practice of emergency ultrasound; who are passionate educators; and who are well versed in ultrasound literature.
About our Fellowship
UCSD’s Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Fellowship was created in 2010 to advance the use of bedside emergency ultrasound to improve patient care and create educators within the field. Our program is EUFAC-accredited, and while it is structured around general ACEP guidelines, it provides value and opportunity far beyond. At UCSD we have a unique culture of interdepartmental collaboration that allows for specialized training. For example, the fellow will train with regional anesthesiology performing nerve blocks, sports medicine to train in MSK ultrasound and joint and PRP injections, cardiac anesthesiology to perform and become certified in transesophageal echocardiography, pediatric POCUS training at Rady Children’s hospital, advanced OB ultrasound with our OB colleagues, and in the ICU for more practice with advanced echocardiography and other critical care applications. Our ultrasound faculty tailor a curriculum to meet the fellow’s interests, ideas, and career goals, and our fellows are thusly trained to become leaders in both academic and community settings.
Length: 1 year
Positions: 1 fellow per year
Clinical Hours: 48 per month (6 shifts). Applicants should note a clinical requirement of 6 shifts (48 hours) a month, compared to the more commonly required 64 hours seen at other fellowship programs, making our compensation highly competitive. Moonlighting opportunities are also available.
Salary: See House Officer Salary Scale + $1000/mo clinical stipend
Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision. Division funding for travel to SCUF and educational endeavors, with additional funding available if presenting research at ACEP, SAEM, AIUM.

Advanced educational opportunities: TEE with cardiac anesthesiology, US guided nerve blocks with regional anesthesia, pediatric POCUS at Rady Children’s Hospital, MSK US with the sports medicine division, advanced pelvic ultrasound with our radiology and OB colleagues, and critical care ultrasound with pulmonary critical care fellows and faculty
Scanning shifts: 8 structured scanning shifts per month. 4 are weekly Wednesday shifts with attending faculty, combined with QA and journal club. Of the remaining 4, 2 are asynchronous shifts teaching residents and medical students, and 2 are subsidized shifts protected for the fellow's own specialty training.
Primary Scanning sites: Hillcrest, Thornton (La Jolla), and East Campus adult EDs, plus Rady's pediatric ED
QA & Image Review: Every week you will review images with dedicated US faculty, residents and students. You are encouraged to review images on your own to ensure review of at least 10% of all department scans per ACEP policy guidelines.
Journal Club: In concert with our curriculum, we review landmark and novel US literature weekly prior to QA
Research Project: One scholarly publication
Administrative Project: One quality improvement project of the fellow’s choice
Teaching Opportunities:

International Outreach: UCSD is one of the leading institutions in the country in global outreach. Each year our division visits a developing country and coordinates an ultrasound teaching course for local physicians. We also have a budding relationship with Ondas de Latinoamerica to help train and learn with ultrasound fellows throughout Latin America. This is a terrific opportunity to get involved in global emergency medicine with an ultrasound niche.
